    Tips to Improve Dog’s Diet

    JamesBy JamesMarch 22, 2022No Comments4 Mins Read

As responsible dog owners, we want to take care of our dogs and shower love to ensure they live their best lives on our behalf. For the well-being of the dog, feeding proper nutrition is beneficial. Having a balanced diet for your dog can prevent long-term health problems and improve their life quality and happiness, including less discomfort and going to the veterinarian. Here are some tips that can help you improve your dog’s diet:

    1. Balanced Diet

According to Nancy Bernard one of the most elite dog walkers in SF “90% of what your dog eats daily should be a balanced and complete a diet. Commercial dog food provides dogs with more than 30 essential nutrients they need. You can feed homemade dog food by ensuring it meets your dog’s daily needs for minerals, vitamins, fats, proteins, and other nutrients.” Keep in mind that you are the only source of nutrition for your dog. You may not eat a balanced diet regularly, but you can do this for your dog.

    2. Weigh

It is also important to weigh your dog every few months. You may not see the little changes, and the weight may increase. Regular exercise is necessary to lose pounds. Take your dog out for a walk or hiking.

    3. Follow the 10% rule

The daily calories consumption of your dog should be no more than 10% from food and supplements. Make a calories list to create a treatment allowance menu. You may consult your veterinarian about the daily calories consumption of your dog. Generally, dogs require 20-30 calories per pound. Calorie counting doesn’t mean you are feeding less to your dog. For instance, a raw chew may contain 100 calories, but two cups of fresh green beans (vitamins and fiber source) contain only 60 calories. To provide a balanced diet without many calories, it is suggested to save a portion of your dog’s diet and feed it as treats the whole day.

    4. Fresh and clean water

Notice how much water your dog drinks. Drinking too little or too much may indicate a medical problem with your dog. To make your dog drink water, treat him in water and let him lick the frozen cube. Homemade broth is a good hydration source.

    5. Read labels

According to vets “Before purchasing something, your dog will eat, check the label on the food. Notice the ingredients, calories, nutritional information, and target life stage. This includes supplements.” For instance, fish oil contains about 40 calories per teaspoon. Although supplements don’t list calories, there are indications on the label. If you see a list of fats and proteins on the label, calories are mentioned. You can call the company if you have any doubt.

    6. Think like a dog

Visualize if someone gives you beets and you don’t eat them; they give you a cake. The next time you hold, you get beetroot. The dog develops the same response when we offer a treat; he expects to get high-value food if he does not eat his food. This can be a vicious circle. If you offer excessive table foods, they may not have room for regular food.

    7. Change things

Rotating dog foods makes mealtimes interesting for your dog. Try feeding various wet and dry food flavors from various pet food companies. Variety can alleviate any problem that may arise with a company’s food.

    Conclusion

You can improve your dog’s diet by feeding a balanced diet and fresh water. It is important to weigh your dog and follow the 10% rule when serving him. Make sure to read labels when choosing food for your dog.
