Getting prepared for the surgery:
You will have an in-person meeting with your surgeon to discuss your surgery details. Here are some crucial steps that you need to take prior to surgery.
- You’ll have to quit smoking or any other form of tobacco such as vapes six weeks prior to surgery and six weeks after it.
- Tobacco and alcohol can result in slower wound healing and even infection. You will get a test done before the surgery to check your blood for any such components and will cancel it if any of these are found in your blood.
- Some substance abuse can cause gynecomastia and you’ll need to completely quit their use to get back the same condition.
- Your doctor will give you a medicated soap containing chlorhexidine to shower two times before the surgery one time in the evening and one time on the surgery day to reduce any infection risks.
Surgery
Your doctor will give you general anesthesia and will make a cut on colored sides around nipples called areolas. These are lifted and the surgeon removes extra fat and skin tissues. In extreme cases, you will get an incision on the inner side of the breast and excessive skin will be removed. After the extra tissues are removed, the surgeon will put the areolas back and close the incision with stitches and some surgical glue.
Your body will absorb these stitches within two weeks to one month, so you won’t have to go back to the doctor to get them removed.
In some cases when gynecomastia is due to extra fat, you can remove it through liposuction and suck out the excess fat with the help of needles with multiple small incisions.
Your doctor might also use a specialized drain which is also called Jackson Pratt to remove any fluid on the site of the surgery. You’ll have to get it removed after one week of the surgery. You will get some medicine to treat pain such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol.
Post-Surgery Recovery
You can take shower on the next day of the surgery, however, you’ll need to dry the surgery site slightly but don’t rub. However, soaking at your surgery site is not allowed and your doctor will guide you on when you can take baths or do swimming.
You might feel some bruising at the surgery site and also get some fluids draining for one week. You’ll need to wear a compression bandage all time until your surgeon asks you to take it out. This bandage supports the incisions and you can only take it out during showers. After the bandage is out, you will need to wear a compressive T-shirt to help you heal and lower any swelling.
Your doctor will also ask you to avoid any physical activity that puts a strain on your incisions for almost one and half month.
