What will the trek to Everest Base Camp be like during the Post Monsoon season?
Well, the trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu (1850m / 6050 feet) to Lukla (2800m / 9250 ft). If the weather is good you will probably fly in a 16 seat airplane. If not, a 5 seat helicopter. Both types of aircraft are standard operating procedure. After arriving in Lukla you will begin your trek down to the village of Phakding (2600m / 8550 ft) by the river, for a very nice overnight stay. Then you walk up a good sized hill to Namche Bazaar (3500m / 11,500 ft), the main trading town of the Sherpas, and stay in the Hilltop Lodge. Namche is a fun town to hang around in, so we take a rest day here. We can walk to Everest View Hotel, and see Everest and Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam, and we can walk down into the town center to eat pizza, cake, and taste good fresh coffee. Next we walk along ridges and rivers to Pangboche (3950m / 12,950 ft), the old summer capital of the Sherpa yak herders. We stay in a gorgeous lodge near the river. The following day, We have a short walk to Dingboche at 4400m / 14,450 ft, the only place in the upper Khumbu where barley can be grown. In Dingboche we take a “rest” day at a warm lodge , and climb up to 5000m / 16,500 ft on a ridge above town for acclimatization. There are lovely views up here of Mt. Tawoche, Ama Dablam, Pumori, Nuptse, Lhotse, Island Peak…amazing. Next stop on our trek is Lobuche at 4950m / 16,250 ft, in a very cozy lodge. Lobuche is interesting as it is the site of the famous Italian Research Pyramid. In factLobuche is our last stop, we go direct from here to basecamp, passing through the outpost of 5050m / 16,550 ft GorakShep for lunch. Finally we reach our Everest Base Camp at 5300m / 17,400 ft.
