It is that time of the year again, and I cannot be more excited! Ever since I was a child, I fancied spending my Christmas at a snowy place. I have travelled to most of the hill stations in India in the past few years; this year, I decided to spend my Christmas Eve in Shimla. From captivating landscapes to snow-capped mountains, The Queen Of Hills has it all to mesmerize anyone.
Since Shimla is not far from Chandigarh, I, along with my family, decided to book a Chandigarh to Shimla taxi for a comfortable trip. Upon reaching here, I was taken aback by the city’s stunning beauty as Shimla truly becomes a snowy, magical land in December.
Here are the highlights of the places we visited while spending a white Christmas in Shimla.
A memorable visit to the magnificent Christ church
Churches in Shimla remain beautifully adorned and decorated during Christmas time. On Christmas Eve, we went to the magnificent Christ church to attend the hymns and prayers sung by the church choir, and it was a beautiful experience.

Situated on Shimla’s famous ridge road from where we had a spectacular view of the white snow-capped Himalayas, this iconic church has had a custom of getting in the year’s Christmas celebration with a pipe-organ ring for more than 100 years now. When I spoke to a few locals here, I found out this iconic Christ Church is the second oldest in the country, and people from far and near visit here during Christmas.
Iconic Shimla Winter Carnival
To celebrate the kickstart of the snowy winter season, Shimla organizes a winter carnival every year. People from almost every part of India and the world come to enjoy the snow. It was late afternoon when we reached the winter carnival, and after the snowman-making competition, we witnessed fantastic fashion shows and dance performances that pulled a massive crowd.

Party at the mall road
Shimla remains in a festive and celebratory spirit in December, with lively colors, festivals, and events happening all over the city. The Ridge and Mall Road are some of the most attractive destinations for travellers. The cafes and local shops offer hefty discounts during this period, and if you are a shopaholic like me, a visit to the mall road will be the most memorable experience.
Plus, strolling down the mall road in freezing weather added to our delight. After some hours of shopping, we visited one of the bakeries nearby to enjoy the delectable desserts and delicious sweets options curated for Christmas.
Exciting adventure sports
Being a big-time adventure sports buff, the next stop on my list was Kufri, where I enjoyed skiing and ice-skating. To my amazement, Shimla holds the enormous and the only natural ice-skating ring in India and attracts thousands of tourists in December.
Located at 2,622 meters above sea level and 16 km from Shimla, near the Himalayan foothills, Kufri is one of the best places I visited in Shimla, and playing in the pearly white snow truly lifted my spirits.
