According to the most recent figures released by the National Statistics Bureau, 2019 was a very good year for the Seychelles tourism industry, with a six percent rise in tourist arrivals.
The information was shared with tourism stakeholders at the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) Marketing Review on Tuesday, January 14, 2019, at Eden Blue, in the presence of Mr. Didier Dogley, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine, and Mrs. Anne Lafortune, Principal Secretary for Tourism.
Mr. Alan Renaud, Principal Secretary for Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine, Mrs. Sybille Cardon, Chairperson of SHTA, and STB Board members were also present at the meeting.
According to the board’s presentation of the quantitative study, approximately 384,204 visitors entered the country from January to December 2019, compared to the same timeframe in 2018.
The leading markets were also revealed to be Germany with 72,509 tourists, France in second place with 43,297 visitors, the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, Italy, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with 29,971, 27,289, and 24,609 visitors respectively, and Switzerland in sixth place with 15,300 visitors.
Mrs. Sherin Francis expressed her delight at seeing that the figures met her standards during her presentation at the conference. She describes that the tourism board set a 4 percent goal at the start of 2019.
“It is very satisfactory to see that the tourism arrival numbers and the receipts remain on the rise showing that the efforts to honour our core mandate are being accomplished. I would like to reiterate my gratitude to our trade in Seychelles and our international partners, as they have been an immense support in helping the destination remain visible while enticing potential visitors,” said Mrs. Francis.
According to the National Statistics Bureau, the European economy grew by 10 percent in the same timeframe last year, with increases of 18 percent in Germany, 14 percent in Switzerland, 12 percent in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, 12 percent in Italy, and 9 percent in Russia. In 2019, the American industry also shows a substantial rise of 9 percent. These tourists came to visit Seychelles and stayed in Seychelles villas and resorts and contributed to the increase of the country’s revenue.
Mrs. Francis also stated that one of the key areas of emphasis for the year 2020 would be rising the number of visitors in the months of May, June, and September during her presentation. Even if the results are adequate, she believes there is space for improvement since the months in question are deemed low-performance months in comparison to the rest of the year.
“2020 is a very prominent year for us as a country as we feature in the Dubai 2020 Expo and also celebrating our 250th anniversary as a country, as we market the country to our diverse audiences, we would also concentrate on the extensive promotion of our smaller establishments receiving lower occupancy,” added Mrs. Francis.
As the number of tourists arriving in the country has grown, so has the country’s revenue; according to the most recent figures for 2019, the tourism industry produced a 3 percent increase in revenue, amounting to 576.4 million USD, or just over 8 billion Seychelles rupees. Story Seychelles Resort, one of the Best Resorts in Seychelles is a part of this increase.
On the digital side, the destination’s success across all channels on social media has improved by 5.6 percent, from 392,612 to 414,764, with a 222.3 percent increase in impressions and a 31.8 percent increase in interaction, according to data provided at the STB marketing conference.
